Why It Matters You're Hiring a GAF Certified Roofer.

GAF doesn't sell certifications. They earn them. To get the GAF Certified™ badge, a contractor passes background checks, has the required state licensing, carries valid insurance, and stays current on GAF's installation training. About 2% of US roofing contractors hold the certification.

  • Manufacturer-backed warranty. Only Certified contractors can register the System Plus Limited Warranty — covers material AND workmanship for 50 years on most GAF Timberline systems.
  • Trained on the actual product. I install GAF every week and stay current on installation specs that change as GAF updates the product (LayerLock, StainGuard Plus, the new starter strip details).
  • Direct line to GAF if anything goes wrong. If a shingle defect ever shows up, I open a claim with my GAF rep — homeowner doesn't deal with the manufacturer alone.
  • No subcontracted "we install GAF sometimes" outfits. If I install your roof, GAF knows my name, my license, and my work history.

Timberline NS Natural Shadow · Entry-Level Architectural
Budget · Solid Pick

What it is

Timberline Natural Shadow is GAF's entry architectural shingle — a true dimensional laminated shingle (not 3-tab) but at a price point closer to budget territory. Most people can't tell it apart from HDZ once it's on the roof; the differences are warranty length, wind rating, and the LayerLock™ install technology that HDZ adds.

Why it works

  • Real architectural look. Dimensional shadow lines that match what neighbors are putting on — no flat 3-tab giveaway.
  • StainGuard™ algae protection. 10-year algae-streaking warranty included — keeps the roof from going black-streaked on north-facing slopes.
  • Lifetime limited warranty on the shingle material itself (transferable once).
  • 130 mph wind warranty with starter strip + ridge cap from the GAF system.

When NS is the right call

  • You're getting a hail/storm replacement check from insurance and want to keep the cost in line with what's covered (no out-of-pocket upgrade).
  • It's a rental property or a house you don't plan to keep more than 5–7 years.
  • You want the GAF brand and warranty without paying for HDZ-tier features.

Timberline HDZ Architectural · Most-Chosen Roof in America
Most Popular

What it is

The Timberline HDZ is GAF's flagship architectural shingle — and the most-installed shingle in North America. It's what 80% of my customers go with when they don't have a specific reason to pick something else. Better warranty than NS, better wind rating, and the LayerLock™ nailing zone that's wider and more forgiving than the older HD generation it replaced.

Why people pick HDZ over NS

  • WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty — no max wind speed, when installed with the GAF starter strip + ridge cap. NS caps out at 130 mph; HDZ has no upper limit.
  • StainGuard Plus™ algae protection — 25-year coverage versus NS's 10-year StainGuard.
  • LayerLock™ technology — the wider strike zone makes for a more consistent install across crews and weather conditions. Translation: fewer wind-driven nail-line failures.
  • 22 stocked colors — the broadest palette in the lineup, so you can match brick, trim, and the rest of your block.
  • Lifetime limited material warranty · transferable.

When HDZ is the right call

  • It's your forever home (or 10+ year horizon) and you want the algae-streak warranty to outlive the roof.
  • You want the most popular color palette and the broadest warranty without going to the premium tier.
  • You're in a high-wind exposure spot — ridge top, hilltop, or open lot — where the WindProven™ warranty actually matters.

Timberline UHDZ Premium · Class 4 Impact-Rated · Hail Country
Storm Country Pick

What it is

The Timberline UHDZ is GAF's premium Timberline. It uses the same LayerLock™ install technology as HDZ but with UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating — the highest impact certification available for an asphalt shingle. Class 4 means the shingle survived a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking the surface. Translation: it shrugs off hail strikes that would crack a Class 3 shingle.

Why pay the premium

  • Class 4 impact rating (UL 2218). The toughest asphalt-shingle classification — recognized by virtually every US insurance carrier.
  • Insurance premium discount. Many homeowner-insurance carriers in Ohio and Kentucky offer a discount on the wind/hail portion of your premium when Class 4 shingles are installed. Jump to the discount section ↓
  • WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty — same as HDZ, no maximum wind speed.
  • StainGuard Plus™ PRO algae protection — 30 years (longer than HDZ's 25-year StainGuard Plus).
  • Heavier shingle. ~360 lb/square versus ~240 lb for HDZ. More mass = better hail performance and longer effective lifespan.
  • Lifetime limited material warranty · transferable.

When UHDZ is the right call

  • You've already had one hail claim and don't want to file a second in 5 years.
  • Your insurance carrier offers a Class 4 / impact-resistant discount (most do — call and ask).
  • You're staying in the home long-term and want the best-performing asphalt shingle GAF makes.

Class 4 + Your Insurance.

Class 4 is the highest impact rating an asphalt shingle can earn — UL 2218 — and many homeowner-insurance carriers in Ohio and Kentucky offer a premium discount on the wind/hail portion of your policy when Class 4 shingles are installed and documented. The exact discount varies by carrier and ZIP code, but I've seen homeowners save anywhere from $60 to $300+ per year on premium after switching to a Class 4 roof.

It's not automatic — you have to (1) ask your carrier whether they offer it, (2) get the savings figure in writing, and (3) submit your install certificate after the roof is on. I provide the GAF certification documentation as part of every UHDZ install, no extra cost.

1. Ask Your Carrier

Call your insurance agent before you sign the install paperwork. Ask: "Do you offer a discount on the wind/hail portion of my premium for installing UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistant shingles?" Get the dollar amount in writing.

2. We Install + Document

I install the Timberline UHDZ with the GAF starter and ridge cap, then provide you with the GAF Certificate of Installation showing the product, install date, and the UL 2218 Class 4 rating. That's the document your carrier needs.

3. You Submit + Save

Submit the certificate to your carrier. The premium discount typically applies on your next renewal. Many homeowners pay back the upgrade cost over 3–7 years just from the discount alone — and the roof outlasts the math by decades.

Insurance discount availability and amount depend on your carrier, your policy, and your ZIP code. NBD does not sell insurance and cannot guarantee any specific discount — confirm with your agent before you commit to the upgrade.
