Why Most Contractor Websites Don't Rank (And the 90-Day Fix)
You paid $3,000 for a website. It looks great. Your mom loves it. But it's been 6 months and you've gotten exactly zero calls from it. Here's the hard truth: a pretty website that nobody finds is just an expensive business card.
The 3 Mistakes Killing Your Rankings
Most contractor websites fail for the same three reasons. Fix these and you'll move the needle.
Mistake 1: One page for everything. Your homepage tries to rank for 15 services in 8 cities. Google has no idea what you do. Is this a roofing company? A general contractor? Does it serve Cincinnati or Cleveland? The homepage becomes a confused mess and ranks for nothing.
Mistake 2: No Google Business Profile strategy. Your site and your GBP aren't working together. They're disconnected. You're competing against yourself. Your GBP should feed your website strategy and vice versa.
Mistake 3: Zero content velocity. You published 5 pages when the site launched and haven't touched it since. Google rewards consistency. A site with 10 new pages per month outranks a site with 0 updates for 6 months, all else equal.
Phase 1 — Foundation (Days 1-30)
Get the basics right. This takes maybe 20 hours of work.
GBP Setup and Optimization
If you haven't, set up your Google Business Profile today. If you have one, optimize it fully. Categories, description, photos, Q&A — all done.
Core Service Pages
Create one page per main service. Roof Replacement. Roof Repair. Siding. Gutters. Each page: 600-800 words, keyword-focused title, clear what the service is and why someone should hire you.
Initial Citation Building
Make sure you're listed on Google My Business, Yelp, BBB, Angi, HomeAdvisor. Consistency matters. Same name, same phone, same address everywhere.
Google Search Console Setup
Set up Google Search Console and link it to your site. This tells Google about your site and shows you what's happening in search.
Phase 2 — Expansion (Days 31-60)
Now scale the foundation. Create cluster pages.
The formula: /services/[service]-[location]. If you do roofing in 5 suburbs, that's 5 pages. Siding in 5 suburbs? 5 more. Target 15-25 cluster pages total.
Content per page: 600-800 words, unique content (not just swapping city names), local references, embedded map, internal links back to the main service page. The pages should serve real searchers. "Roofing contractor Mason Ohio" is a real search. Address it directly.
This phase takes 30-40 hours but is the heavy lifting that moves the needle. These cluster pages will start bringing in calls within 60-90 days.
Phase 3 — Acceleration (Days 61-90)
Now build velocity. Consistency signals authority.
What to do in Phase 3
- Content velocity: Start publishing 1-2 blog posts per week. Topics: "How much does X cost," "Signs you need Y," "How to do Z." Target search terms people are actually typing.
- Review acceleration: Get 4+ reviews per week (use the system from the review post above).
- Backlink building: Sponsor local events, get mentioned on local websites, comment on local business forums. Every local mention is a potential backlink.
- Monitor and adjust: Check Search Console weekly. What queries are you showing up for? What's your average position? Push on the ones closest to page 1.
Why This Works When Agencies Fail
Agencies spread themselves across 50 clients. You're doing this for one business — yours. Nobody knows your services, your cities, and your customers better than you. You can write content faster and more authentically than an agency can.
An agency might charge $2,000-5,000/month for what you just did in 90 days. They'll also take 6 months to show results because they're not prioritizing you. You can do better because it's your business and your reputation on the line.
What to Expect by Day 90
You should see movement in Search Console — impressions up, average position improving. You might not be on page 1 yet, but you'll be trending in the right direction. By month 6, if you keep the velocity up, you should see real phone calls from organic search.
